Understanding EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR Therapy) is a structured, integrative psychotherapy approach in which emotional / physiological distress and negative beliefs related to past events are processed and resolved through eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. EMDR can be helpful with a range of challenges such as trauma, sexual assault, anxiety, depression, grief and loss
What does EMDR do?
Prior to initiating EMDR processing, we begin with a thorough assessment of your current concerns—such as shame, fear, or distressing memories—while also exploring your personal history, including past traumas or overwhelming experiences.
During EMDR therapy, specific memories or experiences are identified and processed. The therapist will guide your attention through structured shifts in focus while facilitating bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping. Throughout this process, adaptive perspectives on past events and more positive self-beliefs may emerge and be reinforced.
Based on your individual needs, goals, and history, EMDR may be utilized as a standalone intervention or integrated into ongoing individual counselling. These sessions are typically less structured and incorporate a range of talk therapy approaches, supporting you in understanding and integrating insights gained from EMDR into your daily life and broader sense of self.
